We found the included documentation and Web site support to be useful and effective when troubleshooting configuration, capabilities and software revisions.
Not having seen one in a while, having a netbook readily at hand again was certainly convenient. The Dell(Dell Precision M20 Battery ) Mini is small and light enough to pretty much travel with anywhere, whether you’re putting it down on the coffee table, on your lap, or next to the old CRT monitor your desktop is still plugged into on your desk (where you can marvel that a whole computer takes up just a fraction of the space that hulking mass of hardware does).
After the novelty of having a computer we could pick up and put down casually with one hand wore off, the limitations of the unit began to shine through. The keyboard is too cramped to touch type, and if you’re used to that, pretty much everything you do becomes slower when you have to hunt-and-peck.
The hard drive, at 8GB, can house a few movies and music albums but can hardly store a collection. The base of the unit also ran fairly warm, not to the point where we had to shift it from leg to leg, but to the point where we could feel it. Eventually, we realized it is what it is - an economical ultraportable notebook Toshiba PA3284U-1BAS battery designed for secondary use on undemanding tasks such as surfing the internet, light word processing, and viewing the occasional movie on the road (albeit without an optical drive). Viewed in that light it was easy to accept the shortcomings with the strengths and really appreciate the Mini.
All in all, this is a high-quality travel laptop suited for folks who have the money to spend for a light-weight, high-performance machine. The SSD works as expected, but make sure you really need that amount of space before spending so much for the drive.
For a 14.1" notebook, the dv2610us is definitely on the portlier side, and is close to being as heavy as many 15.4" notebooks. Still, it feels pretty portable.
As a sidenote for the nerdier folks: the shell appears to be very similar to HP(NC6400 Battery)'s 15.4" notebooks, and the keyboard and batteries are actually identical. I have a good friend who fried her dv6258se when she spilled soup on it, but the keyboard and 12-cell battery are perfectly intact.
Our review unit has a Centrino 2 chipset, Windows Vista Home Premium, and only 1GB of RAM. It took a sluggish 1:18 to boot up (the typical Vista machine takes about a minute). That said, we were able to watch a movie while running Norton Internet Security in the background, which bodes well for everyday multitasking.
We don’t have wireless scores yet, but we were able to surf the Web uninterrupted from a good 100 feet away from the router. And if the T1010 is anything like the T2010 or LifeBook U810 it should have long FPCBP155 battery life.
Similarly, the touchpad is spacious and comfortable. The 2.5 x 1.5-inch pad felt smooth, wide enough for navigating the desktop, without much backtracking. Rather than integrating the mouse buttons on the trackpad like Dell(Latitude D600 Battery ) attempted with the Inspiron Mini 10, the Latitude has separate right and left mouse buttons. Though slightly mushy, they allowed us to accurately make selections.
Aug 30, 2009 7:03 PM | 137 views | 0 comments | Add Comment | ShareIn the looks department, the silver UX30 can easily be mistaken for a MacBook Air, which only someone with the real deal or a tape-measure being able to determine that the Asus at 1.96cm, is slightly thicker compared to the Mac’s 1.94cm.
But now that we're actually seeing how PC makers are packaging and selling CULV notebooks (take Dell's recent introduction of its Inspiron 11z notebook), it's obvious: Netbooks are nothing more than smaller, cheaper notebooks.
“People don’t like carrying around a laptop and their charger,” said Jacobs, 46. “They certainly don’t like the time it takes to open up your laptop FPCBP160 battery, get online and finally download your first e-mail 15 minutes later.”
Unfortunately, the NP-NC20's display, like those of many current laptops, has one of those glossy-finish screens that make reading and viewing media difficult when there's any glare whatsoever. By comparison, two other netbooks currently host 12-inch displays: Lenovo's IdeaPad S12 and the HP(NC6400 Battery ) Pavilion dv2 (HP's machine is technically a tweener-class netbook/notebook).
Toshiba spokespeople say that the NB205-N310's six-cell battery can last for almost 9 hours. Wrong. In our tests, the NB205 survives a staggering 9 hours, 53 minutes. For a little perspective, that is easily the longest time so far that a netbook has been able to run--and this is with the standard PA3356U-1BAS battery on board. That alone catapults this netbook's worth to a top pick on the charts.
Earlier this year, we reviewed Canon's Papershow, a dedicated paper-to-screen device that's mostly aimed at professionals who want to conduct interactive PowerPoint presentations. A similar gadget is the LiveScribe Smartpen, which is geared toward students, linking audio to written text. But the Duo appears to be is the first device to capture ink and convert a plain monitor into a touch screen.
Nokia has seen its profit margins drop over the last quarters as handset demand has slumped, and analysts have worried that entering the PC industry, where margins are traditionally razor-thin, could hurt Nokia's profits further.
The distinction made some sense early on. The first Netbooks were very small, around 7 or 8 inches, and were used for little more than getting online. They were marketed by smaller brands such as Asus(A32-F3 Battery ) and MSI as super-portable, inexpensive notebooks that ran Linux, cutting out much of the cost tacked on with a Windows license. But they didn't really take off until Microsoft began offering Windows XP specifically for Netbooks, long after it was no longer available on new laptops and desktops.
Acer Inc., Samsung Electronics Co., LG Electronics Inc. and 12 other computer makers have signed up to use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chip, the company says. Toshiba(PA3248U-1BAS ) Corp. is the only company selling a device based on the product so far -- the TG01 phone that resembles Apple Inc.’s iPhone. Some analysts expected more products based on Snapdragon to be available by now.
Aug 24, 2009 7:25 PM | 186 views | 0 comments | Add Comment | ShareSoftware-wise, MSI still has the application on the desktop named Click Me.exe that does something then disappears, which makes us a little nervous, Microsoft Office 2007 trial is included, as is the Norton Internet Security 2009 trial. Ulead Burn Now and Crazy talk are also bundled, although what is not bundled, again, are touchpad drivers, and once again, MSI(MSI U100 Series Battery ) still hasn't managed to make them available on its site for download and Sentelic makes it highly difficult to obtain them too. This means by default you won't be able to turn off tap to click, or customise the sensitivity of the palm check. For those infuriated by this, you can find them buried in an MSI Wind user forum here.
However, the U20a’s chiclet keyboard is not quite of the standard of the Macbook Pro’s and has a worrying amount of give in the keys, making typing less satisfying.
There has been a trend in the last year for the addition of fancy lighting effects to laptops FPCBP160 battery– glowing power switches and so on. The U20 takes this to new level with an underlit keyboard and a sparkling touchpad that would not look out of place on Liberace’s laptop (were he still alive, naturally).
As laptops become ever more power hungry so the need for higher capacity Toshiba PA2487 batteries has increased.
Matsushita hopes to step up production of heat-resistant batteries to half of all lithium-ion batteries it makes in 2009.
The company advises users to install the update on all "MacBook and MacBook Pro computers and extra 17-inch PowerBook G4 batteries that were purchased between February 2006 and April 2007".
If battery problems persist after the update, Apple has said users should contact their local Apple store or retailer and the firm will arrange replacement batteries free of charge.
The nettop devices are powered by single-core Intel Atom 230 processors, which run at 1.6GHz and include 512KB of cache. The networking options include wired Gigabit Ethernet and a separate 802.11b/g wireless dongle. The Q110 comes with an HDMI (high-definition multimedia interface) connector for HD video playback on external devices. Operating systems available with the systems include Windows XP and Windows Vista.
I determine whether your cell is one of those affected, you can download a diagnostic program from Lenovo(Thinkpad X60 battery)'s support site here. If your cell is eligible for recall, the application will display further instructions as to how to obtain a replacement. In the meantime, there should be no issue in continuing to use the current battery pack.
Aug 18, 2009 7:37 PM | 239 views | 0 comments | Add Comment | ShareOne hang-up is power. Wi-Fi signals suck a lot of electrical juice. (Go ahead and turn off your laptop's Wi-Fi sometime and see how much longer the Acer Aspire One battery lasts.) Because they need to be plugged in, most 3G-capable Wi-Fi routers are more "portable" than truly mobile—great for remote meetings, but still pretty stationary.
Don't expect to replace your home stereo without adding some external speakers, though. The included two-speaker sound system isn't a total waste, but it lacks the power to fill up more than a small to medium-size room. I didn't notice any distortion when I cranked up the volume; however, the bass was noticeably weak, as was overall definition. A nice set of headphones can make the world of a difference.
The Samsung R610 at first sounds like a great deal: For around 900 dollars US?? (list), you're getting a huge screen and dedicated video capability with a reasonably attractive exterior. Unfortunately, the screen quality greatly erodes that value proposition. Still, if your bank account can handle a little more strain (for an upgraded display), the R610 could be worth a second look. After all, it costs less than the likes of Dell's XPS Studio 16 and HP's HDX16.
Toshiba's Satellite U500 wants to be portable and powerful, which has a negative impact on both the Toshiba PA2487 battery life and the weight. Still, if you need power in a petite package, the U500 might do it for you.
Running 3DMark06 and PCMark05 gave us scores of 4177 and 6366 respectively, this diminutive laptop punching far above its weight. Unfortunately, this also means it leans heavily on the ThinkPad T60 battery, and in our worst-case scenario it lasted one hour, 26 minutes and 15 seconds with all power-saving features turned off, screen brightness and volume set to maximum and an XviD file played back. For lighter use, and particularly with Toshiba's Eco mode turned on, battery times will be considerably longer.
The Dell(Inspiron 6400 Battery ) Studio XPS X1340 boasts a unique look, with its rounded hinges supporting the display and angled shape. The tapered chassis measures (with the lid closed) a rather thick 1.6 inches along the back edge and narrows to 1.2 inches in front. A silver stripe cuts across the lid, separating the piano-black cover from a strip of faux leather. The leather-like strip provides a comfortable grip when toting the laptop around, and, depending on your taste, it either enhances or detracts from the overall design.
Like the Toshiba Satellite E105, the X1340 features a backlit keyboard, which is incredibly useful in low-light situations. It's one of those features, like the two-finger scroll on MacBooks, that once you have it, you find it hard to live without. The keys themselves are quiet, flat, and roomy. The touch pad is smaller than average,Toshiba PA3154U-1BAS battery, running only 2.5 inches wide by 1.5 inches tall. The mouse buttons are quiet and feature an illuminated stripe when the keyboard backlighting is enabled. A row of touch-sensitive media controls sits above the keyboard, along with buttons for turning the Wi-Fi antenna off and on, and ejecting a disc from the slot-loading DVD burner.
Aug 12, 2009 1:31 AM | 196 views | 0 comments | Add Comment | ShareFujitsu Ltd. will aim to strongly boost its profits to record-highs in fiscal 2011 through March 2012 by expanding its overseas sales and restructuring its operations. The company said it is anticipating a record group operating profit of 250 billion yen (US$2.6 billion) on sales of 5 trillion yen (US$52.8 billion), unveiling an aggressive midterm target for the next three years. Its net profit is also expected to reach a record 130 billion yen (US$1.4 billion) in fiscal 2011 in what would be a dramatic turnaround from a group net loss of 112.4 billion yen (US$1.2 billion) logged during the business year that ended in March. Businesses are likely to hit bottom during the current business year, adding Fujitsu(Fujitsu FPCBP160 battery) will aim to raise its operating profit to 200 billion yen (US$2.1 billion) by fiscal 2010 thanks partly to the sale of its hard disk drive businesses to Toshiba Corp. and Showa Denko K.
Of course, such a prominent maker as Seagate could not afford lagging behind its opponents. So, the company now offers the sixth generation of 2.5-inch Momentus drives with a spindle rotation speed of 5400rpm. Like other makers, Inspiron 6400 Battery ,Seagate offers a 500GB model with data encryption but it belongs to the Momentus 5400 FDE series.
Unfortunately, the sound is another victim of Gateway's corner cutting. The MC7803u has front-firing speakers and no discernable subwoofer to speak of--and the results are less than stellar. The audio doesn't get particularly loud, and it comes across kind of hollow. Honestly, it's hard for me to call something an "Ultimate Entertainment" system if it lacks the gumption to run games such as Fallout 3 well or the power to sound good.
The R610's image quality is slightly blurry, the colors seem washed out, and the vertical viewing angles are much worse than on comparable notebooks Toshiba PA3475U-1BRS Battery . You need to adjust the screen to the correct angle, or you're going to have a tough time seeing colors accurately. While the brightness is high, the glossy screen doesn't become noticeably less viewable in moderate sunlight. The R610 can handle video without any noticeable problems, but the quality of the screen may convince you to avoid media on it entirely. Samsung does offer a version of the R610 with a 1080p display (along with a Blu-ray drive), so if you're absolutely set on this model, I would strongly advise ponying up for the upgraded display if you can afford it.
However, Seagate also offers a unique model that has no counterparts in the other makers’ line-ups. We are talking about the 500GB Momentus 7200.4 drive that has a spindle rotation speed of 7200rpm. Seagate has outpaced its opponents in this Fujitsu FPCBP155 battery market sector as they can only offer 7200rpm 2.5-inch models with a capacity of only 320GB as yet. We are very curious to learn the speed and power consumption characteristics of this product in comparison with the others.
The 500GB drive from Toshiba(Toshiba PA3399U-1BRS battery) is the last one on our list. It is no different from its opponents. It is just another 2.5-inch hard disk with the maximum storage capacity available today. The other HDDs to be included into this test session were covered in our previous article on early 500GB HDDs. These are the Hitachi Travelstar 7K500, Samsung SpinPoint M6 and Western Digital Scorpio Blue.
Dena plans to buy a majority stake in the operator of a Chinese mobile social networking site, the Nikkei reports. Dena plans to buy more than 50 percent in UK firm Waptx, which operates China's largest mobile social networking site with a local partner. Dena will buy 8.73 million shares in the company through a private placement. Dena plans to use the portal site's content and expertise to expand its own social networking business. Dena already operates a mobile social networking site in China, but has less than 1 million subscribers while the Waptx service has about 9 million users.
